Day 2 of Building In Public

Why You Shouldn't Start a Blog (Yet) - A Creator's Guide

Let's talk about blogging and why it might not be your best first step into the online content world. Before you close this newsletter - no, blogging isn't a scam. I've been blogging for over four years and continue to do so. But there are some important considerations before you dive in.

The Hidden Challenges of Blogging

  1. Traffic Isn't Automatic

    • Unlike social media platforms, blogs don't come with a built-in audience

    • You need to actively find ways to bring people to your website

    • Without traffic (real people), monetization becomes impossible

  2. The Cost Factor

    • Domain name: ~$15/year

    • Hosting: Minimum $40-50/year

    • Technical setup costs (time or money)

    • Compare this to free platforms like YouTube or Twitter

  3. Technical Knowledge Required

    • WordPress setup and management

    • Website maintenance

    • Basic technical troubleshooting

    • SEO understanding

A Better Approach for Beginners

Instead of starting with a blog, consider:

  1. Start with YouTube

    • No initial costs

    • Easier to connect with audience

    • More natural engagement

    • Faster path to monetization

  2. Use AI to Your Advantage

    • Record videos first

    • Use AI to transcribe and format content

    • Repurpose video content into blog posts later

    • Embed videos on your future blog

Why This Strategy Works

The beauty of starting with video content is that it:

  • Builds authentic connections

  • Requires less technical setup

  • Creates opportunities for direct monetization

  • Provides content that can be repurposed later

Personal Update

I'm currently on Day 2 of my building-in-public challenge. Today's accomplishments:

  • Created 5 videos for different brands

  • Working on content calendar and workflow systems

  • Building while learning and adjusting

Remember: The best strategy is to start creating content immediately rather than getting stuck in technical setup. Once you build momentum, you can expand to blogging as part of your content ecosystem.
